Observation Narrative
This plot is located in a very extensive oak / heath forest that occupies the massive, rolling to level, alluvial fans at the foot of the Blue Ridge below Big Levels (see also plots GPNF038 and GPNF040). The variant here is an open forest dominated by Quercus alba (canopy) and Gaylussacia baccata (low shrub) on a very cobbly, xeric, alluvial fan near "Willow Pond". There is a large gap in the east-central portion of the plot, apparently from an old blow-down. Oak recruitment is poor, but some hickory recruitment is present. The xerophytic grass Piptochaetium avenaceum is abundant in spots where Gaylussacia baccata is not dense.
